Wedding Woes

I am certain you have seen videos like this before. You may even have videos like this from your own wedding or a friend’s wedding. As a Pastor, I have even created some of these moments for people. One time I referred to the bride as groom. Another time, when I introduced the newly married couple, I said their last name incorrectly, and they were friends of mine! The truth is wedding faux pas (or are they faux pi) are fun to look back on and laugh about. They make the day memorable. But, at least for one guy, his mistake wasn't just a memory for him and his wife, but it earned him a place in history, and gave him an opportunity to be the beneficiary of God’s good will.

Last Sunday we began a new sermon series, Here’s Your Sign, this first week had us looking at Jesus’ glory through the miracle He worked at a wedding in Cana (John 2:1-11).  Imagine what it meant for the groom that Jesus showed up that day. Granted, he wouldn't have his poor planning remembered forever on America’s Funniest Home Videos or You Tube, but he had not planned well, or did not have enough money to fund this ceremony. No matter how you look at it, he faced a crisis. For you and me it may not seem like a big deal, but for the groom, his honor was at stake. Based on the passage, we aren't even sure that he even knew it at the time. But, he needed Jesus to show up. He needed Jesus to do a work for him, to provide for him, because he wasn't able to do it himself.

The truth is, this is the way it seems to work most of the time. God is providing for us before we even really know we have a need. Before, we even really know who He is, what He is capable of, or what lengths He will go for those He loves and calls according to His purpose. He is working for our good.

Maybe you’re thinking, it’s just a wedding, but take comfort in that, He cares even about your little things. But on the other hand recognize also that what Jesus did at the wedding is indicative of what He does even in the biggest things. He works in our lives at all levels.
  •          Our greatest problem is sin and God’s wrath. Jesus demonstrates through the changing of the purification water to wine that represents His blood, that He has that covered. Through His blood we are made clean. By His power, we like the water are transformed and made new.
  •          We also struggle with our desires in this life, but in the amount of wine Jesus made, we learn that His provision for us truly satisfies, and that what He wants for us is to experience the abundance of His provision. In Him, we no longer have to settle for the temporary pleasures this fading and failing world have to offer.
  •          Then to think that the God of the universe cares even about your daily needs. I am overwhelmed by a sense of peace knowing, that He has my back. A sense of comfort knowing that I will never be in any circumstance that He is not ready for or is ill equipped to handle.
